Farewell Der Kern. An exploration of Helvetian sounds by Max Bunt, Don Kashew and Déandrah.

This month’s broadcasts for both of our radio residencies serve as an homage to Der Kern, a bar situated off of the Langstrasse in Zurich who will be closing their doors soon after fourteen years of existence. This location is particularly significant to me as it was the starting point for many of our endeavors with Dee Dee’s Picks in the Swiss German part. A venue where laughs were shared, passion for records was enthused, and bottomless beer glasses were consumed, is where I met many people where some eventually got released or featured as guests on our platform. Der Kern holds a special place in my heart, as I am sure it does for many others, and therefore, we wanted to make this month a focus on preserving Der Kern’s legacy.

Thus, we could not have found more suitable people than the first people I met in Zurich and the former Der Kern Residents Fabian Stacoff, also known as Max Bunt, and Don Kashew. Fabian has been not only the face responsible for the creation of the Der Kern logo but also the preacher of obscure records that served as the soundtrack of many evenings at Der Kern. Whereas Don Kashew was one of my first Zurcher contacts who helped me by shedding light in seeking out unearthed gems in the Swiss German area, with his eclectic music taste and our growing bond eventually getting his works released on Dee Dee’s Picks.

It isn’t all bad, as for the next 6 months, the reigns will be given to Enfant Terrible’s Rebecca Zolliker, whose trusted and confident into maintaining the core spirit that Der Kern has provided so far.
